HONORING GILDA RADNER’S LEGACY
(West Los Angeles, CA | May 9, 2013) Comedians Andy Kindler and Nick Swardson have been added to the list of performers who will be appearing at the Cancer Support Community – Benjamin Center’s Fresh Canvas Party on Saturday, May 18th at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica where TV comedy development executive and cancer survivor Jack Herrguth will receive the 2nd annual GILDA Award in tribute to the late “Saturday Night Live” comedy icon Gilda Radner and her legacy of laughter. Gilda was one of the Cancer Support Community’s first participants almost 30 years ago during her fight with ovarian cancer, and her intrepid spirit continues to inspire cancer patients today. “When I was growing up,” says Herrguth, “Gilda was one of my comedy heroes. I used to watch her every week on Saturday Night Live. To be given an award bearing her name is an amazing and humbling honor.” Presenting the award will be The Angeles Clinic’s Dr. Daniel Lieber.

Swardson and Kindler join the previously announced Jonah Ray, Kumail Nanjiani and producer Emily Gordon from the popular underground live comedy show, The Meltdown which LA Weekly selected as “The Best Stand-Up Comedy Show 2012” in their annual “Best of L.A.” issue. In addition to a night of guaranteed laughs, the Fresh Canvas Party also hopes to remind all of the healing power of art with the evening’s benefit art gallery sale with original artwork, from 30 diverse, acclaimed artists, available for purchase. This exclusive and unique gallery show is being curated by The Lois Lambert Gallery. Participating artists who have generously donated their work to benefit the Cancer Support Community – Benjamin Center (CSC) include:
Steven C. De La Cruz, Gali Rotstein, Carol Coates, Lucinda Luvass, Joanna Bielski, Agelio Batle, Allen Harrison, Martiros Adalian, Hillary Gruenberg, Sarah Steinberg, Parker Austin, Joe Ravetz, Randy West, Elaine Carhartt, Miki Warner, Nancy Monk, Dovrat Amsily-Barak, Joan Almond, Janet Roberts, Mel Keefer, Gretel Stephens, Mirror Child, William Fuller, Lara Porsak, Ernie Holzman, Lee West, Ann Gooding, Marion Baker, Susan Thacker, and Billy Zane.
Providing the evening’s musical entertainment will be the acclaimed Louis Cruz Beltran Ensemble. Louis Cruz Beltran has crafted his musical career upon the soulful sounds of his ethnic American background and flavored it with contemporary R&B, Jazz, Latin Jazz, and Salsa. In 2012, Beltran was part of the artist lineup for The 35th Annual Playboy International Jazz Festival.
Proceeds from the evening will allow the Cancer Support Community – Benjamin Center to continue to serve people living in West Los Angeles and the broader Los Angeles community with a full menu of free-of-charge, essential programs overseen by licensed therapists including: support groups, mind/body classes, educational and nutritional workshops, social activities, and individual counseling sessions.
The importance of these programs cannot be underestimated. In 2006, Herrguth was diagnosed with testicular cancer and has been in remission since 2007. He credits his doctors and the Cancer Support Community (CSC) for curing him and helping him get through his treatment. In his words: “For the longest time I tried to avoid talking about my cancer, but when I finished my treatment, I knew I had to deal with the emotional and mental stress of the experience. The Cancer Support Community gives cancer patients and their families a place to be with others who are going through similar experiences. It is very comforting to know you’re not alone. People with cancer can talk to family and friends but family and friends often don’t really know what we, as cancer patients, are going through. CSC makes us feel like we’re part of a special team. And although I may have lost a testicle, I gained some great friends. I think that’s an even trade. You’ll probably have to ask my wife.”
Born and raised in Santa Rosa, California, Herrguth always wanted to work in the entertainment industry. He attended the UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television, where he studied screenwriting. He was a staff writer on the WB sitcom, “Sister Sister”, and in 2004, he worked in alternative programming at CBS, on the hit Emmy-winning shows “Survivor,” “The Amazing Race,” and “Big Brother.” In 2005 he moved to Comedy Central and developed “Krod Mandoon & The Flaming Sword of Fire,” co-starring Kevin Hart. He also developed “Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time” with comedian Nick Swardson and Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison. Herrguth is currently overseeing the critically-acclaimed series, “Nathan For You” from comedian Nathan Fielder and Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim’s Absolutely Productions. In addition, Herrguth has developed projects with comedians Matt Braunger, Kyle Kinane, Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray, Kumail Nanjiani, Jenny Slate, and SNL’s Tim Robinson. He also developed the Comedy Central webseries “Book Club” directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and produced “Funny Business: The Business of Comedy” with Patton Oswalt and Doug Herzog. Jack currently lives in Agoura Hills, California with his wife Jennifer, son Jackson and twin daughters Ava and Eliza, and Oliver, the family dog.
