LONDON CALLING IS A HIT!!!
Come see ‘London Calling – The Musical ‘ at the Hudson Backstage Theatre in Hollywood. The play is produced by Mark Hensley & Gwenn Morreale.
‘London Calling – the Musical’ celebrates the 40th anniversary of the English punk rock band, The Clash and the release of their eponymous debut album in 1977. The play, written by Peggy Lewis, and directed by Rod McLachlan, explores the lives of four young men who endeavor to play and stay in a punk rock band.
The four band mates include cast members Sam Meader, Paul Holowaty, Duane Asante Ervin, and Tom Conlan. Sam Meader stars as Tom, the lead vocalist and guitarist. Meader channels the ineffable, disaffected youth sentiment of the time, and evokes a young Malcolm McDowell. Amy Scribner who plays Ann, Tom’s mother, as well as a employment counselor, shows her acting chops. As Tom’s mother, Scribner is nurturing and kind, but easily switches hats to become a businesslike counselor. Sean Smith is another versatile actor in the cast who plays Eddie French, the manager who discovers Tom, as well as three other roles. Gary Picot plays Tom’s father and a judge. Picot garnered a lot of laughs in the judge’s wig and court dress.
Steve, performed by Tom Conlan, is convincing as a robbing yob who redeems himself in jail. Torie Tyson is hilarious as Babs, mother of the thieving Steve. As a brassy and brazen bar maid, Torie belts out her vocals and grabs the audience’s attention instantaneously as she steals the show. TORIE TYSON REMEMBER HER.!!!!!!
Sam Saldivar plays Steve’s thief friend as well as three other characters. Paul Holowaty plays Jimmy and capitvates the audience with his physicality. Duane Asante Ervin as Rudie shows much promise as a young actor on a meteoric rise. Dee, performed by Michelle Jean Anderson, and Sue performed by Hayley McLaughlin are attractive girlfriends. The two dancers, Punk 1 and Punk 2, played by Sarah Marquelle Kruger and Natalie Davis hold the viewer’s attention and move the play forward.
You will enjoy hearing Clash classics like “Rock the Casbah”, “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, and of course, “London Calling”. The musical arrangements are recorded by Vince Jones, and include players Martijn Lenoble on bass, Victor Indrizzio on drums, and Joel Shearer on guitar.

On the 40th anniversary since the release of the first Clash album in 1977, “London Calling” a musical with music by The Clash and book by Peggy Lewis will premiere at The Hudson Theatre during the Hollywood Fringe festival in June.
London Calling is a gritty musical inspired by music of The Clash based on the events of our lives and others, and a youth spent playing in bands, living in squats and pursuing dreams, in Holland and Canada.
The lyrics of the songs are the dialog, that propel the story forward. A story of aspirations, disappointment and redemption,
The Clash’s impact on a generation can not be disputed, and their music continues to influence and inspire.
