On May 7th, 2015, Ellen and Michel Shane, along with MC Jonathan Banks hosted the Stars and Sea Gala Fundraiser at Casa Escobar in Malibu. Ellen and Michel Shane founded The Emily Shane Foundation in honor of their lovely daughter, Emily Rose. Five years ago, Emily’s life was tragically taken along the Pacific Coast Highway when a speeding vehicle struck and killed her. Emily, a 13-year old at the time, is remembered as being the girl “who got along with everyone.” In remembrance of Emily’s compassion for those close to her, as well as strangers, her parents set up The Emily Shane Foundation.

At the time of her passing, Emily Rose had been struggling academically. In regard to Emily’s issues at school, Ellen and Michael Shane felt compelled to create not only The Emily Shane Foundation, but also The Successful Education Achievement Program, or SEA Program. The SEA mentoring program engages students from middle school, who otherwise would not have the resources available, in one-on-one mentoring with college students from Pepperdine and USC. “Pass it Forward” is the SEA Program’s mantra in recognition of Emily’s natural ability to show kindness to all. Proceeds from the Stars and Sea Gala Fundraiser support the SEA Program. As a testament to the success of the program, several middle school students and their mentors at the fundraiser acknowledged that the pupils’ grade point averages had improved, thanks to the mentoring made possible by the SEA Program.

As well as a delicious buffet and an open bar, guests were entertained with The Red Carpet, music, art and comedy. Artist Benjamin Senig, an abstract expressionist, painted bight circular shapes on a canvas as “The Voice” singer Taylor Phelan sang soulful tunes accompanied by his guitar. A silent and live auction sponsored, among other items and services: Universal Studios Passes, Magic Castle VIP Guest Cards, four tickets to the TEEN Choice Awards, Dodger Tickets & Parking Pass, Geffen Playhouse tickets, Ackerman Family Wine Tasting, a beach house stay for two nights, a one-week vacation in Belize, photography prints, beauty treatments, designer jewelry and accessories. The Blue Plate, Hugo’s, Bui Sushi and Kristy’s offered dining and libation specials.

The Stars and Sea Gala Fundraiser proved to be a joyful and fruitful occasion tinged with sadness for the loss of a beautiful life, in memory of Emily Rose Shane.

The Emily Shane Foundation is dedicated to promoting the ideals of Emily Rose Shane, who was kind to all, compassionate, empathic and eager to help anyone in need. She was a happy person who almost always had a smile on her face.
Mission and Goals

Founded by her family following her tragic murder at the age of 13 on April 3, 2010, The Emily Shane Foundation has three main areas of focus:

Promote the concept of “Passing It Forward”

We encourage everyone to perform acts of kindness for others. Record them by clicking on the “Good Deeds” link on this website. No deed is too small. In this way, we honor the person that Emily was: kind, caring, empathic, and always ready to help others in need.
Help us reach our goal of one hundred million good deeds!

The SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program

This educational initiative provides one-on-one mentoring for struggling or failing middle school students in the mainstream classroom. We only serve those who could not otherwise afford this much needed individualized support. SEA Program students are those who risk “falling through the cracks” and/or “don’t fit the mold”. The educational system has no solution to help these children outside the classroom. Our unique program acts as a safety net to help make a positive difference in their academic success.

Promote Safety on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu

We are committed to raising awareness and promote solutions to the dangers that this 27 mile stretch of highway presents. Our aim is to end the grief and sorrow that we and many others have had to endure.

Beauty is doing a daring adventure
Beauty is living your life
Beauty is kissing under the stars
Beauty is hearing a baby’s first giggle
Beauty is pulling an allnighter with your best friends
Beauty is watching the sun come up
Beauty is smelling fresh bloomed flowers
Beauty is laughing forever
Beauty is love and love is forever

– Emily Shane
