The compelling and celebratory presentation will take place at  and be on view from April 23 – July 2, 2017, opening with a public reception on Apr. 23, from 2-5 p.m. Are you familiar with City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship Program? As background, Los Angeles is among the only citiesgnizing the achievements of 271 visual, performing and literary artists / artist-duos who, as COLA recipients, enhance the creative legacy of Los Angeles. Through its thought-provoking content, COLA 20 illustrates the continued vitality of the Fellowship to highlight master artistry and foster the the City’s bold creative spirit. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs’ (DCA) and LAMAG–one of the country’s last remaining municipal galleries–presents this landmark exhibition, which celebrates the first twenty years of the City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship Program, recognizing the achievements of 271 visual, performing and literary artists / artist-duos who, as COLA recipients, enhance the creative legacy of Los Angeles. Through its thought-provoking content, COLA 20 illustrates the continued vitality of the Fellowship to highlight master artistry and foster the the City’s bold creative spirit.

 

Over the years, COLA has awarded 271 awards and this year’s presentation includes a memoriam to 11 COLA fellows, who have passed, including Michael Brewster, Wanda Coleman, James Doolin, Ron George, Tony Gleaton, Arthur Jarvinen, Larry Karush, Willie Robert Middlebrook, Jr., Rachel Rosenthal, Michael White and Norman Yonemoto, whose work depicting the treatment of Japanese-Americans during World War II internment resonates today as we face an administration discriminating against immigrants. The exhibition also features a literary lounge that will include works from all literary fellows as well as a roaming timeline that will feature archival ephemera from each year. A special commemorative book will also be published this fall.
